Surface Scanning Technology

Any vehicle manufacturer with an established vehicle model and simulator can benefit from the road models produced using our new digital road building capability.

rFpro is exploiting a breakthrough in scanning technology to capture road surfaces with better accuracy than ever before, and up to 50 times the level of detail. The key development has been to replace the single pulse laser LIDAR time-of-flight scanning process with a number of separate, phased laser signals. Instead of waiting for each signal to return before firing the next one, the controlled phasing allows the signals to be overlapped, increasing both the speed and quantity of data captured.

We capture and reproduce the differences between a frost-damaged Detroit highway, a bumpy minor road in Wales, a smooth German autobahn or any other surface. This means vehicle manufacturers located anywhere in the world can evaluate their vehicle’s chassis response to any road type in a realistic virtual environment, without leaving the office.

In 2012 we built just over 100km of digital road models; in 2014 it was more than 1000km and this year we expect to build approximately 3000km. The new technique isn’t just more detailed; it’s also faster, which allows the scanners to drive at normal road speeds without impeding other road users.

To cater for differing budgets and graphical quality requirements we offer three qualities for digital road builds all based on the same LiDAR scanned data points:

Automatic - Believable scenery but not matching the real-world.

Representative - Scenery will match the ‘type’ of real scenery alongside the road but will not be made to match exactly.

Hi-Def - Targeting contemporary IG hardware with high-spec CPU & GPU at a minimum of 1920x1200 at 120Hz per channel. Within the constraints imposed by the hardware, the aim of Hi-Def graphical quality is to match as closely as possible the surrounding scenery and buildings.

Comprehensive Track Library

A large library of High-Def circuit models built from accurate LiDAR surveys is available. LiDAR based track databases include most of the F1 circuits, North American Indy & NASCAR circuits as well as La Sarthe, Nordschleife and an invented Vehicle Dynamics proving ground with lane-changes, split Mu and low-Mu surfaces, a handling circuit with inclines and programmable surfaces. For new track commissions we can conduct accurate LiDAR and photographic surveys. The precise specification for accuracy, precision and density vary depending on the equipment used and the survey conditions. If your requirements will involve modelling of systems >30Hz then it is important to discuss this with us first. Track detail is achieved by mapping survey photographs onto a LiDAR point-cloud generated road surface. We offer three quality levels, Engineering Quality - equivalent to a traditional low-quality engineering simulator, Low-Definition - equivalent to contemporary game standards of graphics and High-Definition - near photo-realistic circuit models running ambient occlusion. The quality of the road surface is identical, the differences are all graphical.

Cloud-based Processing

The growing volumes of road data requested by OEMs have led rFpro to switch to Cloud-based processing and storage, providing almost limitless scope for further growth and enabling hundreds of CPU cores to work simultaneously on data processing each project, further reducing timescales
